American Journal of Numismatics, vols. 37–38, covers several consecutive issues of the first series. This run combines formal numismatic studies with five detected plates, society proceedings, reviews, correspondence, and collecting news. For Greek material, the plates and precise specimen descriptions are especially worth checking against named owners or institutions. The volumes can supply early photographs, weights, legends, and provenance clues that may be absent from later catalogues. Use the original issue and page number, rather than only the bound-run title, when citing a specific item.
Because much of the material predates relevant archaeological evidence and modern standards of provenance documentation, verify dates, mint assignments, typologies, reported findspots, and ownership histories against current scholarship and surviving collection records.
