American Journal of Numismatics, vols. 15–18, covers several consecutive issues of the first series. This run preserves a dense record of collecting and publication activity during the expansion of American institutional collections. Greek coins occur in specimen notes, reports of discoveries and purchases, reviews, correspondence, and notices of European catalogues and auctions. It is useful for provenance work and for understanding which attributions and reference systems were current in the early 1880s. Use the original issue and page number, rather than only the bound-run title, when citing a specific item.
Because much of the material predates relevant archaeological evidence and modern standards of provenance documentation, verify dates, mint assignments, typologies, reported findspots, and ownership histories against current scholarship and surviving collection records.
