American Journal of Numismatics, vols. 19–22, covers several consecutive issues of the first series. These volumes document numismatic scholarship and the coin trade in the mid-1880s. Greek material is scattered through articles, brief communications, auction and collection reports, bibliographic notices, and society business. Researchers can use the run to trace early American access to European discoveries, identify coins once held in private cabinets, and recover period descriptions that may correspond to specimens now dispersed. Use the original issue and page number, rather than only the bound-run title, when citing a specific item.

Because much of the material predates relevant archaeological evidence and modern standards of provenance documentation, verify dates, mint assignments, typologies, reported findspots, and ownership histories against current scholarship and surviving collection records.
