De Saulcy surveys the ancient coinages associated with the Holy Land, including Persian and Hellenistic issues, Hasmonaean and Herodian rulers, Jewish revolts, and neighboring Phoenician and Syrian mints. The work is useful for the historiography of Hebrew and other Semitic legend readings, early ruler sequences, and specimens from European collections. It also shows how nineteenth-century scholars combined coins with biblical, classical, and archaeological sources to construct regional history.

Because the work predates much of the modern archaeological, die-study, epigraphic, and provenance evidence, verify dates, mint or ruler assignments, legend readings, authenticity, and current specimen locations against current corpora and databases.
