Use this path when a coin is cited by a Svoronos number, described as Ptolemaic royal coinage, or connected with Alexandria, Cyprus, Cyrenaica, or Egyptian hoards. The combined Svoronos entry is the quickest starting point, while the separate text and plate volumes are better when the exact number, plate, or visual comparison matters.
BMC Ptolemies helps translate older British Museum catalogue references into ruler, type, and specimen context. Newell’s Egyptian hoards are useful when the problem is chronology or circulation rather than a single catalogue number.
Check how a hoard was reconstructed
Zervos’s Athena-tetradrachm study works from surviving coins and Newell’s notes. Use it to ask whether the composition of a reported group is secure before treating that group as chronological evidence. A museum holding, a dealer parcel, and an excavated hoard may preserve different levels of information about their original association.
The Fethiye Museum hoard adds a small group reportedly found in Lycia. Record the issue and its marks separately from the reported findspot: cuts and countermarks can help explain a coin’s history without identifying the place where it was struck.
