The third volume treats major parts of Asia Minor, organizing cities, peoples, and rulers geographically rather than alphabetically. Its lasting value is historiographical and bibliographic: it records earlier readings, collection evidence, and the reasoning by which Eckhel assigned legends and types to Anatolian mints. The eight-volume Doctrina was foundational because it replaced much cabinet-by-cabinet description with an ordered system based on geography, minting authority, and historical sequence. It remains useful for tracing citation histories, reconstructing eighteenth-century scholarly arguments, and locating references to collections or coins no longer readily identifiable.
Read the Latin terminology carefully and distinguish the Greek section (vols. I–IV) from the Roman section (vols. V–VIII). Many dates, rulers, mints, readings, and authenticity judgments have been revised, so use the work primarily with modern corpora and current collection records.
