Volume VI treats imperial coinage from Julius Caesar through Hadrian and their families. Its relevance to Greek numismatics lies chiefly in comparative imperial portraiture, titulature, chronology, and the political framework for contemporary provincial issues. It can also clarify older citations in which an imperial type or reign is used to date a Greek civic coin. The eight-volume Doctrina was foundational because it replaced much cabinet-by-cabinet description with an ordered system based on geography, minting authority, and historical sequence. It remains useful for tracing citation histories, reconstructing eighteenth-century scholarly arguments, and locating references to collections or coins no longer readily identifiable.

Read the Latin terminology carefully and distinguish the Greek section (vols. I–IV) from the Roman section (vols. V–VIII). Many dates, rulers, mints, readings, and authenticity judgments have been revised, so use the work primarily with modern corpora and current collection records.
