Babelon catalogues Achaemenid royal coinage and the issues of satraps and dependent dynasts, drawing heavily on the Cabinet des Médailles and illustrating the material on thirty plates. It is useful for darics and sigloi, satrapal portraits, local scripts, dynastic sequences, mint attributions, and the provenance of major Paris specimens. The volume also shaped the older boundaries between “Persian,” “satrapal,” and local civic coinage in Asia Minor.

Because the work predates much of the modern archaeological, die-study, epigraphic, and provenance evidence, verify dates, mint or ruler assignments, legend readings, authenticity, and current specimen locations against current corpora and databases.
