Babelon’s first volume of Mélanges numismatiques gathers studies on Greek, Roman, and eastern coinages, with seven plates and discussions of individual types, mints, hoards, inscriptions, iconography, and collection material. It is useful for locating focused arguments that may be cited separately in later literature and for tracing specimens in the Cabinet des Médailles or private collections. Researchers should consult the contents and indices rather than expect a continuous regional corpus.

Because the work predates much of the modern archaeological, die-study, epigraphic, and provenance evidence, verify dates, mint or ruler assignments, legend readings, authenticity, and current specimen locations against current corpora and databases.
