The 1866 volume contains substantial ancient-numismatic papers on Ptolemy VII Philometor, the Achaean League, the two Jewish revolts, an unpublished coin of Laodicea in Phrygia, a Phoenician legend linking Motya and Akragas, unpublished Greek coins from Prokesch-Osten, and provincial issues of Apameia. It also includes a notice of the coin of the Indian ruler Sophytes, finds, book reviews, and detailed society proceedings. These contents make the volume particularly useful for Ptolemaic, federal Greek, Judaean, Sicilian-Phoenician, Phrygian, and Indo-Greek historiography.
Because the volume predates modern excavation standards, comprehensive die databases, and many subsequent hoard publications, verify dates, mint and ruler assignments, readings, and reported provenances against current corpora and the present location of cited specimens.
