The Numismatic Chronicle 1839 is the annual London volume cited as NC 1839. It belongs to the journal’s formative first series, when British collectors and antiquaries communicated newly observed coins, private-cabinet material, discoveries, translations, and correspondence. Greek articles are often short and specimen-driven, but can be the earliest printed record of a type or collection. The plates and specimen descriptions are especially useful for matching coins to old collection names, sale records, or museum acquisitions and for recovering details lost in later summary citations. For a useful citation, record the article author, title, page range, and plate rather than citing only the year.
Because the volume predates modern excavation standards, comprehensive die databases, and many subsequent hoard publications, verify dates, mint and ruler assignments, readings, and reported provenances against current corpora and the present location of cited specimens.
