The Numismatic Chronicle 1863 is the annual London volume cited as NC 1863. It belongs to the early new-series period, when longer regional and dynastic studies were appearing beside society proceedings, find notices, and reports on museum purchases. The volume is valuable for the transition from antiquarian description to more systematic classification by mint, ruler, and monetary standard. Society proceedings and correspondence should not be skipped: they record exhibited coins, recent purchases, queries, donors, and informal observations that may supply provenance or a first notice. For a useful citation, record the article author, title, page range, and plate rather than citing only the year.
