Kraay reassesses the classification and introduction of the early Athenian owl coinage against the wide range of dates proposed by earlier scholars. The article places stylistic and numismatic evidence within the history of that debate. It forms a useful counterpart to Seltman’s earlier book and Kroll’s later study of the transition from Wappenmünzen.
