Garrucci’s richly illustrated corpus surveys the coinages of ancient Italy from Etruria and central Italic peoples to the Greek cities of Magna Graecia, including cast bronze and early struck issues. Its extensive plates are valuable for identifying specimens, obsolete attributions, and types known from nineteenth-century collections. The work is particularly useful for the history of Italian numismatic classification and for series that cross modern boundaries between Greek, Italic, and Roman coinage.

Because the work predates much of the modern archaeological, die-study, epigraphic, and provenance evidence, verify dates, mint or ruler assignments, legend readings, authenticity, and current specimen locations against current corpora and databases.
