The "Horsemen" of Tarentum

Evans develops a chronological and typological study of Tarentine silver distinguished by mounted figures, using style, symbols, magistrate names, overstrikes, and die comparison to organize a long and difficult series. The eight plates are valuable for matching specimens and following his groupings, while the catalogue preserves references to coins in nineteenth-century collections. Researchers can use the work to understand the origin of later “horseman” classifications and to trace specimens whose modern records cite Evans without explanation.

Because the work predates much of the modern archaeological, die-study, and provenance evidence, verify chronology, mint and ruler assignments, legend readings, authenticity, and present specimen locations against current corpora and databases.
