Gardner treats Greek coin types as archaeological evidence for religion, art, civic identity, and lost monuments. Sixteen plates support comparisons of deities, cult statues, myths, personifications, animals, and symbols across regions. The book is useful for the history of numismatic iconography and for generating hypotheses about local cults or sculptural prototypes, especially when paired with later archaeological evidence and more complete type corpora.
Because the work predates much of the modern archaeological, die-study, epigraphic, and provenance evidence, verify dates, mint or ruler assignments, legend readings, authenticity, and current specimen locations against current corpora and databases.
