Gardner offers a broad history of coinage from its beginnings through the early Hellenistic age, organized around regions, monetary standards, artistic development, and political change. Eleven plates support comparisons among archaic and classical series. The book is useful for the historiography of coinage origins, diffusion, and interregional standards and for understanding the synthetic model used before modern archaeological and hoard datasets. This is one of two scans of the same edition.
Because the work predates much of the modern archaeological, die-study, epigraphic, and provenance evidence, verify dates, mint or ruler assignments, legend readings, authenticity, and current specimen locations against current corpora and databases.
