Mr. Friedlaender, who has published the first known copy of these tetradrach- my 53 ), has issued opinion that they are at assign, with the greater likelihood white of less, at Ariarathe king that his father Mithradates the Great had imposed on Cappadocia after death of Ariarathe VIII and of Ariarathe IX, all the two son by Ariarathe VIL But, notwithstanding the excellent reasons that Mr. Friedlaender has done worth in favor of this attribution, she is not yet not again certain. Because, in assuming that the installation of Ariarathe had place in 93 and that this often reigns interrupted have finished in 84, at more late, the date 13, the more high drachmas , at the same portrait that the tetradrachms, don't would match more to the duration of sound reigns. In considering in Besides, that Ariarathe didn't have that eight years when he girded the tiara, and that his thirteenth year of reign he don't counted that twenty, he seems impossible to claim to a teenager this age the portraits that we offer the drach- my and tetradrachms. In order of get out of these difficulties, he should be assumed that the head royal represents Mithradates VI who, of done, was the master of truth wheat of Cappadocia, and, in Besides, that he occupied the country longer than we don't admit it generally. — He y has in effect of the resemblance between the head of our board H, No. 8 and the one of a few portraits some of Mithradates VI. 11 seems also that Ariarathe VII has summer murdered before 99 and no in 9 6 53 ); and we knows finally, that after 84 the king of Pontus still occupied, for several times, one part of Cappadocia and even the country whole. The count of Prokesch has assigned his tetradrachm to Attalus I, king of Per- game, in se fondant on the resemblance of portrait with the one of some coins of Attalides. However, it is rather the contrary to what we could ad- put, and recognize the portrait of Seleucus I in the head of tetradrachms of Pergamon, of which he is question. Because, as well as Mr. Six me the done observe very judiciously, Philtaire may well have considered Seleucus as the xtigtï]S of the dynasty of Pergamon, and honor him like such on his coins, in y putting sound portrait with the tiara, without knots, attribute characteristic of gods. The resemblance between these portraits, which show the same traits of a

424 — •old man and the same harshness of expression, is in quite large effect ; what seems the distinguish one of the other, can be attributed to the diversity of workshops in which they have summer engraved. Because he is impossible of class in Pergamon the tee- tradrachms of Antiochus with the horned portrait , who are undoubtedly the same provenance that the staters gold of Seleucus I, the type of a horse bust 2 ), and that the following drachma: 16. 16m . This drachma of Antiochus seems to have been struck in Syria or Babylonia, likewise that the staters of his father Seleucus, and date from the same time. The heads, of which execution artistic is not always with one value equal, are constantly of the same character and are obviously those of the same person- swimming; they have no resemblance to the portraits some of Antiochus I, aged. The head of our drachma therefore represents necessarily that of Seleucus , father of Antiochus ; done who cannot surprise when we se recalls that living from Seleucus, from year 293 av. B.C., Antiochus took part in the administration of the empire and received the title of king of Upper Asia. It is also very likely that the No. 13—15 date of 293 and the death of Seleucus in 281, period during which Antiochus fit mint coin in his name and title, but with the sound head father. IX, 6, 7 and 8, I got the opportunity to demonstrate that certain monograms, which we encounter on bronze coins of Antiochus IV and Alexandre Bala 6 ) and who are for- mes by the characters xa, xb and x, are the signs of value of xaks.ovç, du Bî/ukiov and of TST(jâ/aXxov. This system coinage in copper, introduced already by Seleucus I, developed under his successors which, by proportioning the module weight of different fractions, in have brings out the value more clearly tinkling. A leave of reign of Seleucus II (see the No. 45) up to the one of Alexander Bala, we even meets parts of eight xalxoi or of obols of copper. In good of case we can note that the weight of /cclxovs and of his multiple equal to little close the one of the silver drachma and of his mul- tips, so that often the weight of coins of 4 and 8 xctk/.oï corresponds to the one of tetradrachm and octodrachm 7 ), like this generally had place at the beginning of coinage in bronze. The coinage of copper of Antiochus III is particularly abundant in groups of coins, of scaled value, who differ quite noticeably some of others by the manufactures and by the style and who document by there the di- versity of places of their broadcast.
