Holloway examines the literary traditions and imagery associated with the Syracusan coin conventionally called the Damareteion. The study considers how the lion and the historical role assigned to Damarete have been interpreted. It is best used as an argument within the coin’s historiography, alongside later reassessments of its dating and historical setting.
