Beulé presents one of the earliest systematic studies of Athenian coinage, arranging owls and related issues by style, fabric, denomination, and historical period. The book is useful for tracing the development of pre-die-study Athenian chronologies, older names for groups, and nineteenth-century interpretations of civic symbols and monetary policy. Collection references and illustrations may also document specimens before later museum acquisition or market dispersal.

Because the work predates much of the modern archaeological, die-study, epigraphic, and provenance evidence, verify dates, mint or ruler assignments, legend readings, authenticity, and current specimen locations against current corpora and databases.
