To be completely accurate, it remains for me to say that the 3rd fascicle of V Ephemeris epigrap/iica, t. VII, p. 335, recently published, gives Lincoln's inscription, with some slight modifications. reading published by the Archseological Journal which I reproduced under my No. 5. Here is the revised text:

Note the monogram ^ ligature of A and V, consisting of so much in a small oblique line grafted at mid-length on the letter Ai and to put this particularity in relation to the conjecture that I also mentioned the word PIAONIVSi which perhaps needs to be corrected in PIA^ONIVS on the mosaic of Treves. Whatever happens this point, the confrontation of the forms Piavonius and Piavvonius, used indifferently in numismatic and epi-texts graphs, does not allow us to decide whether the case is comparable to that of the particular Latin notation for ^ in i^ius for vivus^ juenis for juvenis^ Ammaus for Ammavus^ Flaus for Flavus, or if, on the contrary, it is a question of the germination of very frequent in Gallic tonomasticus, Litavicus and Litai>iccus Maricus and Mariccus^ Danotalus and Dannotala^ Meddugnatius Esu^ius^ Faluppa^ Urappus^ DrappeSy and even in Tonomas- Roman tick, Apuleius et Appuleius^ Aponius et Apponius, Should we pronounce PiavoniuSy with a consonant v or Piauvonius?

Both arguments can be defended, without their parties without being able to come to an agreement.

On June 2, 1889, in Mairy-sur-Marne (10 kilometers from Cbalons- sur-Marne, on the left bank of the Marne), the gravedigger of the common, by digging a grave in the cemetery which surrounds Teglise, found a skeleton about two meters deep. deur. Near the corpse, at waist height, was a roll of coins. It contained:

1** A teston of Francois bust to the right; closed crown. Sit nomen, etc. Cross quartered with three lilies at 1" and 4**, and a Daupbin at 2* and 3*. Stores well.

2^ Thirty-four dozen of Gbarles VIII, Louis XII, and Fran* ^ois I**'. Shield of France crown in a circle with four lobes.

5^. Cross confined with 2 crowns and 2 lilies, in a circle four lobes. Some have the cross without cantons, but angles of the circle are trefoils. Poor conservation.

We know that in July 1644, Cbarles-Quint took and briiled Vitry* en-Pertbois on the Marne. Brissac, who commanded the troops French, had several engagements with him, and crossed the

Marne to take refuge on the left bank, the enemy occupying the right bank. It is probable that he was a victim of these engagements. ments who was buried in this place.

We have before us the four public volumes by M. Letellier (18, quai des Orfevres) under the title of Descrip" Hon history of French, Gallic, royal and set mummies gneurials. The aim of the author who has more good I want to criticize, and bring together, in a small format, information on the coins minted in France at all times period, annotated in alphabetical and geographical order. For a large number of pieces, Mr. Letellier indicated the prices.

The learned English Assyriologist Theo. G. Signal pins^ in V Academy of May 17, a Babylonian brick, containing a contract formed in Babylon on the 24th day of the month of Lyar, Fan 185, Aspasin 6la king. Mr. Pinches had thought of The Emporeur Vespasian, which will have been given as a date to this contract the interval between 69 and 79 AD, and would have dated back to approximately 116 BC the starting point of Fere unknown mentioned in the cuniform text.

Mr. Terrien de Lacouperie suggested, from his school, that Aspasin could well designate the king of the Gharacene Hyspaosines, who is ascended the throne in 129 BC, and of which we have a coin dated from Fan 124. The year 185, in this case, refers to would be in Fere des Seleucides and would give for the date of the contract (312 minus 185) Fan 127, which would coincide very well with the reign of Hyspaosines. The style of the Tablelte would, it seems, allow such an attribution. Get this second hypothesis to be good unlikely, because how can we admit that a public officer dared date a contract from a wren of Gharacene, while Babylon was in the possession of the great king Arsacidus. However, it is not necessary not reject this ingenious idea of Mr. de Lacouperie, because we We don't know what the future holds for us in history, yet poorly known in these regions.

Mr. Terrien de Larouperie, professor at the University of London, imbliCf in the latest notebook of the DC V Academic Reports inscriptions (1889, p. 388 to 348), a Bactro-C/tinoise currency bilingual, from the first century before the Black Era.

Gelle coin worn in Tavers a horse walking on the right.ivec a circular legend in bacterial characters, and on the reverse several symbols arranged in a circle, which M. L. recognized for elre ancient Chinese signs. The Bactrian legend, which was to contain 19 to 20 letters, is incomplete, approximately third party, but we were able to easily restore everything that is titulative. M. L. read maharajasa rajadirajasa niahatasa a of the great king, king above kings, great”; as for the proper name, it is unfortunately incomplete: there are only two certain characters some... ya sa^ of which only one, ya belongs to the name [sa being the genilif sign). There is a great probability that the beginning from the word Hcrama^ which would give Heramaya or Hermaeus the last king of Bactria, who was defeated by Kadphizes I*"", around 30 B.C. I must say, however, that what remains of the first three characters does not allow you to see //era; my him- even is doubtful, so that you cannot look at corarae definitive reading Heramaya. Mr. Percy Gardner, who described this piece in his catalog in 1886 (p. 172, n** 4), n*a, from rest, gives this restitution of the name of the Greek king only with reservation.

The Chinese legend that M. L., by comparison with others ancient coins of China, read a coin of... weighing two ounces four Ichus", offers, in reality, nothing interesting, it would be better for us a city name or a prince's name. We seem to see traces of Scythian letters on the margin external circular, but the poor condition of the part does not allow not to note this third legend. Anyway, here it is a very curious currency by the two legends more or less some that she presents to us. M. L. sees there a specimen of a coinage issued jointly by the king of Bactria Hermaeus, and the sovereign of the Yue-Tchi, while they did not have forget Chinese again to adopt Bactrian as a language official. The Chinese legend would therefore have been taken not from

the type of Chinese coins has a rate on the other side of the TYaxarte in Tan 30 BC. AD, but on coins minted three centuries ago.

The fifth volume of the Catalog of scientific collections {The Institute of Oriental Languages in Saint-Petersdourg*, has been published recently by M. A. de Markof. 11 is dedicated to description of the coins of the Arsacids and Sassanids, as well as that coins minted under these two dynasties, by various princes of Eastern Iran, Khorasan and Transcaspies up to rOxus. The latter are not the least curious, because they are a recent discovery and difficult to read. The legends are written in an alphabet of Aramaic origin, perhaps even of Pehlvian origin. 11 even seems to be two distinct alphabets which would have been formed at different times annuities. There is a field of study to be cleared for orientations lists; unfortunately there are no specimens in France known about these currencies.

The collection described by M. de M. includes 46 of these pieces, 733 Arsacid coins, approximately 500 Sassanid coins and 01 coins Arab governors of Persia. The work contains a introduction and a very complete bibliography on the subject.

Mr. Tiesenhausen, who has already made known to learned Europe the rich numisraatic collections of MM. Stroganof and Komarof (see our previous notices in this Review), gives today the description of a certain number of pieces orientated pillowcases from the Linevitch cabinet ^, all coming, like most coins from Russian collections, finds made in Transcaspies, a region destined to become the promised land [Obi^tovannaia ZSmlia) of the numismatists, following the expression happy with M. T. Colonel Linevitch's collection has been strengthened

Thomas to Bahram VI Tchoubin, with Pehlvian legend, and which were interesting to reproduce because that they served as a type for the coinage of Bokhara; 4* one bilingual silver coin of Abaga Khan minted in Nishapour, without date. Mr. T. gives, according to Mr. Vasilief, the true reading of the Mongolian word ncrchcr “in the name of” that Fraehn and Schmidt had read darougJia a lieutenant”, version that M. de Saulcy had rejected in 1842, and which, since then, has remained incorrect; 5® a beautiful very rare silver coin of Gha'iatseddin Pir Ali, the last king of the small dynasty of the Kourt of Herat (1381 AD), 0** and an important series of modern coins of the Chinese Khans (Kashgar. Their coins bear legends in three languages: Turkish, Manchurian and Kital, and have not yet reached our European collections. It is also to be regretted that M. T. did not not given the drawing of some of these very curious pieces. (^this is the only criticism that I will address to this work, which testifies great experience and perfect knowledge of the subject, like everything that comes out of the pen of the conservative scholar of Hermitage Museum.

Photiades-Pasha, former governor general of Crete, former Minister of Turkey in Alhenes and former ambassador to Rome. The high positions occupied successively by Mr. Photiades had allowed him, during |)lu8 of thirty years, to bring together a incomparable collection of coins from Greece's own: this is what what the preface to the venle catalog indicates in a few sentences, written with great care and erudition by Mr. Froehner. Also, the Photiades-Pacha collection has been around for a long time famous, both for the number and for the beautiful conservation of parts; unique, unpublished, or first-class medals tance were very numerous there. The Greek countries to which she extended are Thessaly, Ulyria, Reire, Arcanania, Telolia, Locris, Phocis, Boeotia, Euboea, Attica, Achaia, Telida, Messenia, Laconic, Argolis, Arcadia, Crete and the other islands (Paros, Naxos, etc.), finally Byzantium; all forming a series of 1530 numbers. We give below after the hammer prices, which, in general, were not very high. only for rare and exceptionally beautiful pieces. This piece, very old style, known only so far in two authentic copies, has been minted pee around Tan 450, and it relates to the wars which took place at this time, between the Arcadians, the Eleans and the Lepreates of Triphylia. Wroth (Warwick). Pontus, Paphlagonia, Bithynia and the Kingdom of Bosporus (Catalogue of the Greek Coins in the British Museum^ edited by Reginald Stuart Poole). London, a vol. in-8.

With the present volume, the catalog of the British Museum crosses the Bosphorus and enters Asia for the first time Minor. As this magnificent publication becomes j)oursuit it takes further developments authorized by its legitimate success: this time we have until Irente- nine collotype plates. The catalog itself is strong rich, and you see that before writing it MM. the conservatives of the London Cabinet of Medals make the greatest efforts to improve the various series that must contain nite the projected volumes. Mr. Wroth's introduction is iuteressanle: Tauleur was inspired by the example of Head which, in several of the volumes written by him, the Attiquc, for example, gave us truly magisterial prefaces Irales. From his, Mr. Wroth could have expanded further, given the diversity of the series that it combines; I will say also that he could perhaps have come up with more personal ideas. nelles in the classification of the royal coins of Pontus, Bosphorus and even Bithynia.

Despite the qualities of accuracy and the science with which have written the descriptions, I cannot resist protesting check the system adopted at the British Museum and also at the museum of Berlin for the transcription of monetary legends. We have Youlu, in the very text of the catalog, reproduce material- ment the strength and arrangement of the letters, which is blameworthy, in my opinion, for various reasons: firstly, it is useless, since the boards give us the photograph of the piece; secondly, it is often inaccurate, both from the point of view paleographic than from the point of view of material arrangement, and whatever precautions are taken typographically, we only comes to within a point which creates an illusion; thirdly, We often place the reader, uninitiated, in the presence of a a veritable grimoire whose decipherment is difficult for him. By example, I transcribe the description of the reverse of the Ama coin- sia cited above: Mr. Wroth gives us exactly what follows:

In the presence of such transcriptions that the author does not not seek in the least to interpret, many of those who have to consult the work may wonder if they are not will not come to meaning more quickly by doing without the text and by directly resorting to the very image of the pieces which we are given on the plates. Imhoof-Blumer and Otto Keller Tier und Pflanzenbilder auf Munzen und Gemmen des Klassischen Altertums. Leipzig, Teub- ner, 1889, gr. in-4«.

This collection includes twenty-six collotype plates, repro- resulting in a total of 1352 figures. The first thirteen boards are dedicated to medals, the others to stones engraved. The text limits itself to explaining materially the types reproduced: it is a simple description, made with care, The accuracy and competence that characterize all the work of Mr. Imhoof-Blumer or those with whom he collaborates. But we must not one should not look for considerations in this work mytliological on the animals and on the plans which appear on coins or on engraved stones. The authors do not have addresses, if not a few times and incidentally, this interesting subject which would explain to us, for example, why the lion is the symbol of Miletus, Bee that of Ephesus, the wolf that of of Argos, etc. Many of these symbols are already explained, without doubt, but there are an even greater number who are not not: there is a field of study which remains open and which no one Mr. Imhoof was no longer in trailer condition.

Here are the divisions adopted in the collection of MM. Imhoof and Keller: mammals, birds, reptiles, fish, insects, crustaceans, cephalopods, fantasliquos animals, plants of all species. In a word, it is the animal and vegetable kingdoms of which we review the manilcslalions in nuniismalics and glyptics. So rich that although this is a magnificent gallery, it is not complete; as in all the pinned collections, there are pieces missing, and these are naturally the rarest. For coins only, I could cite some regrettable omissions; but what's the point?

It is better to emphasize the general interest of this original collection general, called upon to provide daily services. 11 will return to naturalists for very special reasons, what you understand iiously; he will give back to the archaeologists who study and research the works of the aniraaliers of Tantiquite; he will make it constant ment to numismatists, because if it falls into your hands a currency of attribution difficult and on which we do not distinguish almost nothing but a vague profile of a bird, a quadruped or a plant, open the MM directory. Imhoof and Keller, the magni- fantastic boards and the excellent tables that accompany you will soon read erabarras. E.B.

SouTZO (Michel C). Introduction to the Study of Italian Coins ancient, Part Two. Macon, imp. Prolat brothers, 1889, in-8** of 64 pages and four tables.

This new study by Mr. Soutzo is the continuation of this study of which we reported in the Numismatic Rewue of Tannee last (1889, p. 160). After recalling his previous research which set at ^120 value ratio of bronze to ar- gent among the Romans, the author establishes that the coins of bronze of the Romans all have real value and that Rome did not known other legal fiduciary currency than the ace of false weight ayanl force course, in liberal times. Legal reductions of the Roman bronze unit are, according to Mr. Soutzo, numbered of three: in 264 BC. BC, Tas was reduced from 12 to 2 ounces; in 217, it was reduced from 2 to 1 ounce; in 89 it was reduced from 1 ounce to half ounce. The Attic mine, weight unit of Campania, familiar to the Romans, was worth 16 ounces, while the pound pro- preraenl said was worth 12; hence, the mode of sharing the unit in 16 became as usual for the Romans as the division into 10 or in 12 parts.

When the Romans saw their first denarius, they reduced their bronze unit to > then chose for first silver coin the ^/g also of their weight unit<^ of silver, the ^j^ of the ounce. The quarter of the denarius weighed just one scruple and the Romans, previously accustomed to using scrupulous as a monetary unit, adopt the sesterce (quarter of the

denier) as a unit of account. The first Roraain denier had no, with the Attic drachma, simple value relationships; of There, we were obliged to create the victoria which was worth eight aces. But the denarius from the uncial period (84 to the pound) is a reduced copy of the double victory; hence, the disposition of the victoriat. “The denier of The semi-uncial period was worth 40 aces and the sesterce was worth 10 aces; it was then that the sestertius became a nonios (decalitron), the number mus sestertius. The 7i6 semi-uncial denier was worth 2 ^/^ as [its- tertius] » This quarter of a sesterce or bronze sesterce was coined, and this is the little sestertius that historians talk about. The quarter of this little sestertius acquired, among the Romans, a meaning s[>ecial and, like this fraction 4® of the semi- uncial weighed just a Macedonian chalque or a reduced ace of Aga- thocle, it also became a Roman monetary unit, Tassarion unitary bronze coins of Antony. »

Similar considerations are presented by Mr. Soutzo on gold money and its relationship with money money, on the value relationships existing between money Roman at various times and the currencies of Campania. The abstract nature of this research hardly allows us to give an analysis; we must therefore be content with them point out to both numismatists and economists, emphasizing especially on the tables annexed by Mr. Soutzo to his work, and which make it possible to obtain an exact and precise account of the theories that the author strives to establish.

We are pleased to announce to readers of the Review numismatics the completion of the Directory of printed sources of French numismatics. We must first congratulate the authors of the speed with which they brought their business to fruition end; especially since q has not etc to the detriment of accuracy. The second volume of MM. Engel and Serrure includes the list numismatic works classified in alphabetical order names of authors, from K to Z; anonymous works and notices;

orders, decrees, tariffs and other official documents. The third volume includes the additions, that is to say the list of books and memoirs published during the printing and that of some works omitted in the two previous volumes; then 4a alphabetical table of contents. Before talking about this table, I will point out a few ouldis to which the supplement does not have remedy. I do not mean by it to diminish in any way the value of the work of MM. Engel and Lock. Only, as I am convinced that they will be obliged to give us a second edition before it is long, I think it would be useful to point out to them these slight defects.

In Abbe Lebeuf's nora, I would have liked to find the Disserta- tion on several circumstances of the reign of Clovis and in particular on the antiquity of the coins of our kings and those which bear the name of Soissons. Paris, 1738, in-12. To the cited memoirs of Mr. H. Lepage, would it not be appropriate to add The offices of duchds de Lorraine et de Bar (Nancy, 1869, in-8°) book which contains closes (p. 219) a chapter entitled Masters of Coins, where Ton even finds information on the types of currencies Lorraine. It is right that MM. Engel and Serrure have cites, under n** 4004, the Summary inventory of the ddparte archives^ mental institutions of Meurtlie^and^Mosclle. But why don't they have any? acted in the same way with other parliaments, and did they not indicate all archival inventories which contain the analysis or the indication of monetary documents, starting with T///- summary inventory and mdt/iodic table of funds allocated to National Archives, Paris, Imprimerie nation., 1871, in-4o, p. 387. I do not see that V Summary inventory of archives departments of the Cote-d’Or, written by M. J. Garnicr, i.e. nowhere mentioned in the Repertoire) but we find, in volume IV, pages 411 to 415, the inventory of bundles B 11200 to 11216, all bundles consisting only of monetary documents. The step- wise of their introduction oil MM. Engel and Serrure promise to indicate the works relating to the coins of the French princes gays, who have become foreign sovereigns, authorizes me to report to them The oblivion of Minieri Riccio's collection entitled Saggio di codice diplomaticoy oil are printed several letters from Charles of Anjou relating to the manufacture of coins and accompanied by figures taken from the registers of the Angevin Naples archives.

In the chapter devoted to anonymous works, I note The absence of Almanacks of currencies published in the 18th century, which contain interesting plates.

I would not have noticed these omissions if I had not seen a way to rent MM. Engel and Lock. Because these gaps are of little importance lantes; however, these are the only ones that daily use of the Repertoire I almost didn't meet there. Now, let us not forget, this Directory contains 7,016 numbers.

Which puts the work of MM. Engel and Serrure above all the other numismatic bibliographies published so far, it is the alphabetical table which forms its crowning glory. First, there is a single table, where are classified, in order rigorously alphabetical, the names of places, the names of people, monetary legends and also certain sections, such as Carolingians, Merovingians^ mdreaux, obsidionales, or, pilgrimages, etc. Gertes, the classification of works and memoirs by author names was useful; it is interesting to have the list works of this or that numismatist. But much more useful the classification provided by the table; how much more interesting be able to quickly find the indication of what has been written on the numismatics of Lausanne, on that of Languedoc, on the coins of Charlemagne as on those of Raimbert, bishop from Verdun. Printing errors must necessarily be drag into a table that extends from page 93 to page 250. The authors have found a way to overcome this inconvenience, read imitated the method followed by M. Cumont in the Bibliography reasoning of beige numismatics, and they returned, not only- raent to the number of the Repertoire, but still to the author nora.

In this way, if you print: “Lennick. Merov. attrib. a =. 6559 (Wauters), » while it should be 6560, this only has one slight inconvenience; because, thanks to the name of Wauters, it is easy It is up to the reader to correct the number. In a word, this table is good designed and it was necessary. Without her, the Repertoire would have been incomplete.
