The denarius n**4l offers on one side the image of a horse and the legend GODOLAICO COO; on the other side, a cross formed of four globules around a central ring and the incomplete legend + IR€DO I was unable to interpret ter this legend, but I will recall that several deniers with the Pectains legend and consequently minted in Poitiers are signed if not of the same mon- silence, at least of a homonym. A NEW GORONAT DENIER

OF CHARLES VIII

STRIKES IN MARSEILLE

Provence being flooded by coronial funds nals and patacs, struck at the Marseille Mint, on November 7, 1492, the council of the city of Marseille welcomed the complaints of the treasurer of Provence. He decided to pray to the viguier count d’or- suspend the manufacture of these parts and the sequestration of the corners*. These currencies are extremely rare today. Mr. Mallet has public in 1862 a coronal denier, remains unique*. We know two more varieties of patac or double denier, very rare coin also. A new denier coronal, whose type is absolutely distinct from the type of the already public coronal denarius, has just entered into my collection.

This piece is very curious and very interesting. The initial K of Karoliis is found in two cantons of the cross on the reverse. The name of the King of France is not recalls that there and so to speak incidentally. It's a new fact, not only in numisma- tick of Marseille under Charles VIII, but still throughout French numismatics of the 15th century.

The weight and type of this currency prove that it is indeed a coronat denier and not a patac. He is in red-brown copper. The typing is defective; she leaves singularity to be desired. The letters are irr6- gulieres. The ecu to the friends of Marseille is very large. The letters, except the A, are Roman, as on the coronat denier and the patac already known.

Two publications relating to the value of mon- They were made in Avignon in 1497; the first took place on March 17. There is mention of currencies gold from Provence (florin, florin known as Magdalon (14 sols), gros de Provence (10 deniers), parpalholes of Tarascon (18 deniers), cc patac de Provensse per tres d. The last coronation of Marseille, published by M. Mallet and remained unique, was later described ment ^ various occasions by MM. Hoffmann, Blancard and Caron*. Today he is part of the rich cabinet medals from the city of Marseille. During the sale of the Mallet collection, Mr. Laugier took hurry to acquire this rare coin. The bottom of the obverse is crude at the place where the Fecu de Marseille, as I was able to ascertain by an excellent drawing that was kind enough to send me Mr. Laugier. Mr. Hoffmann, in his description, did not did not pay attention to the presence of this ecu.

It would result from these two medals that the city de Gyzique was awarded three gifts: the first under Iladrian, second under Septimc Severe, the third has an indeterminate period that we usually placed in the middle of the century, under Gal- link. We will see that these conclusions are inaccurate because the premises on which they are based are themselves.

Firstly, item no. 1, which was never review, appears to have been misread by Vaillant. Such was already Tavis de Mionnet, who, after having reproduced the description of this scholar, adds in note: cc Medaille doubtful, because of the neocorate, which rather belongs at the time of Antoninus the Pious. Bronze n' 3 with r NC^KOPflN has already appeared above* pect k Marquardt {Cyzicus^ p. 88, note 5). Indeed, it would be unique in its kind; moreover, we come to see that still under the reign of Gallienus, Cyzicus is twice titled n6ocore; now, this emperor is the last, we believe, under which they were raised temples to the imperial divinity: we therefore do not see not how Cyzique could have obtained after his a third neocorate reigns. I add that the dc style our piece indicates, on the contrary, a sensitive epoch clearly prior to the reign of Gallienus. As for h pretend that a city, after having obtained a three- sixth or fourth neocorate, may demote h a lower figure is an assertion that we found, c^i and l^i, in the ancient works of numismatics, but which is no less devoid of of foundation. Such a thing could only have happened when a neocorate had been granted by an emperor whose memory was abolished after his death: the temple erected in his honor being then demolished or disused, it is natural that the neocore city drops by one unit6 the number of his neocorates: this is what happened, by example, at Nicomedia, after the death of Heliogabalus.

Ultimately, out of three elements invoked to establish to establish the chronology of the merchants of Cyzique, three had been poorly read and poorly reproduced. Cyzicus did not never had more than two neocorates: Tun conceded under Hadrian, but who only appears on his coins from Antonin Ic Pieux; the other, under Caracalla,

We see by this example how archaeologists and historians, who are not professional numismatists, must be wary of indications that they find in ancient works numismatics; if they are not able to check directly on pifeces, they will do wisely to resort to the guidance of a more experienced colleague deny6. Krause constructed his fanciful theory of “rolling boats” on a whole series of fake readings of this kind, and it is very regrettable, as Mr. Babelon* has already reminded us, that the author of most recent work on this subject, Mr. Buechner, has not not subject to serious verification and completes the numismatic documents which he used.

Last March 15, that is to say the same day I corrected the first proof of my note on the gentile name of Victorin, (see above, p. 65) we discovered a new terminal in Rennes ilinear of this marker, by demolishing a portion of Tan- old enclosure, rue Rallier; a few days later, another, then a third, and finally the lower portion of a fourth, to which the name gentilice is given. I do not have to talk here about epigraphic monuments of Maximin I*"" and Tetricus, making also part of this considerable find, but it is necessary to add to my list of the seven inscriptions of Victorin, already con- naked, the three short stories on which we read his gentilice, two in the form Piavonius, |)ar one and one in the form Piav^ voniasy with a redoubled i> as on the coins of this prince. I record them by numbering them following the previous ones.
