The Numismatic Chronicle 1923 is the annual London volume cited as NC 1923. This volume belongs to the interwar phase, when die-linked chronology, careful hoard analysis, and specialized studies of individual mints and rulers were becoming central methods. Its articles and reviews can be important for the genealogy of standard classifications and for specimens documented before later market dispersal. Notes on legends, monograms, countermarks, and mint attributions can preserve the first published reading of a type or document the successive hypotheses behind a modern identification. For a useful citation, record the article author, title, page range, and plate rather than citing only the year.
Because the volume predates modern excavation standards, comprehensive die databases, and many subsequent hoard publications, verify dates, mint and ruler assignments, readings, and reported provenances against current corpora and the present location of cited specimens.
