The Numismatic Chronicle 1877 is the annual London volume cited as NC 1877. This volume comes from a period of expanding museum cataloguing and increasingly comparative work on Greek mints, kingdoms, legends, and metrology. It combines formal papers with brief communications, discoveries, book notices, and society records that document the evidence available to scholars before the great late nineteenth-century corpora. Notes on legends, monograms, countermarks, and mint attributions can preserve the first published reading of a type or document the successive hypotheses behind a modern identification. For a useful citation, record the article author, title, page range, and plate rather than citing only the year.
Because the volume predates modern excavation standards, comprehensive die databases, and many subsequent hoard publications, verify dates, mint and ruler assignments, readings, and reported provenances against current corpora and the present location of cited specimens.
