Millingen publishes coins of Greek cities and rulers that he regarded as unpublished or insufficiently known, drawing on major European cabinets and private collections. The work is most useful for first appearances of rare types, early readings of legends and monograms, and collection references that predate later systematic catalogues. Its comparative discussions can reveal how a coin’s mint or ruler attribution evolved, and the plates may preserve the only accessible image of a specimen subsequently lost or dispersed.

Because the work predates much of the modern archaeological, die-study, and provenance evidence, verify chronology, mint and ruler assignments, legend readings, authenticity, and present specimen locations against current corpora and databases.
