Imhoof-Blumer and Keller assemble animal and plant representations on ancient coins and gems, with fifteen plates and identifications informed by classical texts and natural history. The work is useful for recognizing species, attributes, civic badges, agricultural products, and mythological creatures on worn or poorly described coins. Its cross-medium comparisons can reveal iconographic conventions, though the biological identifications and assumed symbolic meanings require modern review.

Because the work predates much of the modern archaeological, die-study, epigraphic, and provenance evidence, verify dates, mint or ruler assignments, legend readings, authenticity, and current specimen locations against current corpora and databases.
