These coins (1138-48) have thick flanges and are naturally minted. neglected although destiny is carefully executed. We can compare the head of Pallas with that of the coins minted in Syracuse around 317 BC. The style of these pieces, moreover, is very variable and if a few" some show analogies with Campanian currencies (we point out a reprint on a liter of Suessa, Garrucci, pi. 83, 1), the greatest part seems foreign to this country. We found a large number of them in the famous Vicarello depot and they were imitated in Cosa, in Etruria; we also know of numerous copies with inscriptions

incorrect: ROMAO, ROMAAO, ROMAAC, ROMAAC, ROMAAC, ROMAAO, ROMAAOC, ROMAMO, ROMNAO, ROMANC, RO-

MAAI, ROMAAN, RCMA, DOMAOfl. Garrucci, struck by the tail of the OC design" thinks that these coins with legend counter- made were struck by the Celtic Gauls, using the Greek C instead of the S Latin and writing Romaioc for Romaios, In Apulia we find at this period The use of C for 2 in the coinage of Asculum.
