The coins of Abonotichus, exclusively in bronze, begin under Mithridates Eupator, then, after a long interruption, resumed under Trajan. It should be noted n° 3) the type of Asclepius, which explains the favor that the cult met in this city of Glycon, new incarnation of Asclepius. The “glyconian” types begin under Antonin to continue, at least at intervals, until the end of the coinage. The representation of Glycon is, in general, consistent with Lucian's description (Alex. 6 and 12). It was a real tame snake, bought in Pella in Macedonia, which we had wearing a canvas mask somewhat resembling a human face (£v6pu>ir4|Aop

Lucien tells [Alex. 58) that Alexander was authorized by Marcus Aurelius to strike a new currency having as types on the one hand Glycon, on the other the soothsayer himself with the bands of his ancestor Asclepius and the harp of his other ancestor Perseus. This currency has not been found and it is reasonable to doubt its existence.

On coin No. 19 the type and legend Zupopu; (for Ztoypioç, west wind?) are unexplained. Perhaps they have some connection with the Zecpuptov promontory located at i5o stadia west of Abonotichus (Ps. Arrien, Perip. 20).

The coins of Abonotichus bear no date, but on an inscription of time of Septimius Severus (Inscr. gr. rom. 91) represents the era of Pompey, 64 BC.

AMASTRIS

"Afiaurcpt;, later 'Afxàorpiov, 'Afxâarpa, today Amasra; ethnic 'AfAaorptavot and (on the oldest currencies) 'AfxaarptETç or 'AnaarpeTç. This city owes its existence tence and its name to Queen Amestris or Amastris, daughter of Oxathres, brother of Darius Codoman, who was married successively to Crateros, to Dionysius, tyrant of Heraclea, and to Lysimachus. Repudiated by the latter in 3oo BC. BC, she returned to her principality of Heraclea which she administered wisely on behalf of her sons, Clearchus and Oxathres, who, once they came of age, were to murder him. It was during his regency, a very short time after 300 (Memnon, IV, 10), that she founded the city of Amastris, by bringing together the inhabitants of four small Greek towns on this coast, Sesamus, Cytorus, Cromna and Tieion (Tium); however, the latter broke away from the association almost immediately and once again became a distinct city. Cytorus and Cromna were nothing more than towns in the territory of Amastris, Sesamus became its acropolis (Strabo, XII, 3, 10).

After the murder of Amastris, Lysimachus confiscated his principality and, a little later, gave it as an appanage to his new wife, Arsinoe (around 285). Lysimachus died (281), Was Amastris his governor — or his tyrant? — Eumenes of Tieion, probably the future dynast of Pergamum *, who, rather than selling it to the Heracleots, delivered it gratis to Ariobarzanes, son of Mithridates Ctists, in 279 (Memnon, c. XVI). Amastris fit part, for two centuries, of the kingdom of Mithridates. In 70 it was occupied by Triarius. Pompey restored it to city status and attached it to the province of Bithynia Pontus (64) of which it continued to be a part until the reorganization of Diocletian\ The ten cities of this province, located on the Euxine, formed a particular xotv<5v 3, distinct from that of Bithynia proper, and presided over by an àp^iepsùç n^vrou (CIG. 4149) or pontarch (Inscr. gr. rom. 95, 97). As Amastris on its currencies takes the title of metropolis, it was assumed that it was the seat of this xoiv<5v.

During the first years of its existence (300-279), Amastris struck magnificently. fical staters, of weight and Persian types \ in the name either of the founding queen, or

of the city; there are bronze divisional pieces. Under the Mithridates (279-70) we did not finds only bronzes with “mithridatic” types. In Roman times Amastris did not also strikes only bronzes, but for a long time without imperial effigies; even when the effigy series begins (under Trajan) the pieces without effigy continue concurrently. Among the notable types, Zeus Strategos and Hera should be noted. (n 08 3i following), protective deities of the city (Inscr. gr. rom. 89) ', Agave (n° 53), the Apis ox, the river Parthenios (n° 49), the currency of alliance with Amisus and above all the numerous Homeric types (head of Homer, river Meles) whose presence at Amastris cannot explain.

Some Amastris coins bear value marks: r (3 assaria), A (4), LT (6)ï H (8). As for the dates, counted from the Pompeian era (64 BC), we do not found them only until the time of Augustus; however, we know from the inscriptions (Inscr. gr. rom. 85, 89, 90) that this era remained in use much later.

Kp&pva, coastal city located between Cytorus and Amastris (Ptolemy, V, 1, 7), 120 stadia of the latter (Ps. Arrien, Perip. 20); Exact replacement has not been determined. Cromna, already mentioned in the Homeric catalog, played no role in the his- tory; since the year 3oo BC, it was absorbed into the synoecism which formed Amastris.

The coins of Cromna, which all belong to the 4th century, are for the most part silver drachmas (?) of maximum weight of gr. 3, 60, maybe tetroboles Persians. The laureate head of the right, with its long falling braids, represents a archalsant type of Zeus, perhaps borrowed from a local idol'; the head of the back, although inspired by the coins of Sinope, could therefore represent Hera.

GANGRA-GERMANICOPOLIS

f fl or xà ràYYP* (sometimes, on currencies, TavYpa), today Tchanghri or Khangra, in the southernmost valley of Paphlagonia. The primitive village, whose name means “goat” in Paphlagonian (St. Byz. s. v.), was built on a rock; it was the residence of Morzios and the Déjotarus, and, at the time of the annexation Roman (autumn 6 BC), was considered the capital of the country, although Strabo (XII, 3, 41) disdainfully calls it iroXt?fAdfciov Sjxa xaî cppoupiov. To a unknown period, but undoubtedly under Claudius, Gangra took the name of Germani- copolis (and not reppav^iroXi; as we read in Ptolemy, V, 4, 5), or, to speak more precisely, a new city of this name arose in the neighborhood, undoubtedly at the foot of the ancient Paphlagonian village: this is what the name indicates official repnavix<5TcoXi<; ^ -rcpèç Yifypm used in Justinian's Novelle 29; of even on coinage no. 52 we read reppovixowSXeux; irpôç rà^p». From the 111th century, moreover, the city had taken up in current use the ancient name of Gangra', under which it figures in ecclesiastical historians and in Hierocles, and which alone survives. Gangra was, under the High Empire, dispossessed, it seems, of the rank of capital of the Paphlagonia for the benefit of Pompeiopolis; but later it was the Christian metropolis of the country and certainly the capital of the new province of Paphlagonia in the organization of Diocletian and Constantine.

Gangra did not mint coins before the Roman annexation, although it can be assumed posit that it was in the workshop of this city that the royal coins of Pylaemenes and Déjotarus Philadelphia. The first coins of Gangra under the empire (Nero, Marcus Aurelius) simply bear the name EZTIÀ; the attribution in seems assured by the more recent coins where the name Germanicopolis is accompanied loincloth of the curious epithet îtzIol Oeô>v 3. Coinage with the name Germanicopolis begins under Septimius Severus; the return to the old name of Gangra took place under Caracalla. On a large number of pieces the city takes the title of APX» riÀ<|>. who has

NEOCLAUDIOPOLIS

Strabo (XII, 3, 38) mentions a village of Phazemon (4>aÇi)[ju&v; *aÇtfxtuv on the inscription of Vezir-Keupru), capital of the district of Phazemonitide which extended to Test of the Halys between Gazelonitide and the territories of Amisus and Amasia. This district was erected as a city by Pompey, and the new city, called NcdwroXtç, rose, he says, in the immediate vicinity of Phazemon (xxcà 4>aÇ7)p.û>va xcÀ^v). At the time of annexation of Paphlagonia, Neapolis was part of the kingdom of the Déjotarus: this is what results from the inscription of Vezir-Keupru (Inscr. gr. romanae, III, n° 137) where we read that the oath of allegiance to the emperor was taken in 3 BC. BC, by the *aÇtfxamïTou, o\ [tt^v vûv N*àiw]Xiv XeYojxivTjv xatoixoûv[xe<;]. This inscription fixed at the same time the site of Phazemon-Neapolis'. A little later, obviously under Claudius, Néapolis changed its name to NeoxXau$i

The coins of Néoclaudiopolis all bear the legend NeoxXaoSumoXtiT&v and go from Trajan to Septimius Severus. The era used is the Paphlagonian era of 6 BC. AD which also presents the aforementioned dedication (no. 139) under Carus.

The territory of Pimolisa, the ntjxtoXîorjVTJ (Strabon XII, 3, 39 and 40), extended on both banks of the river; it does not appear to differ from the ntjxoXTxu; (sic) (Strabo XII, 3, 25) where the two races and the two languages were mixed. The city, or rather the fortress, was located on the edge of THalys (Cédrénus, p. 626 Bonn); identification with Osmandjik, whose citadel stands on the right bank of the river, is probable (Anderson, Studio, Pontica, I, p. 102).

Pimolisa only struck a few bronzes during the time of Mithridates Eupator. She was then absorbed into the new city of Pompeiopolis. In the time of Strabo she was in ruins, but it later recovered.

nofAin;t<$7toXic (Ptolemy, V, 4, 6; coins and inscriptions) or nojjwnjiotaoXiç (Strabo r XII, 3, 40; Hierocles; Justinian, Nov. 29) was founded by Pompey (in 65 or 64 BC). BC) in the valley of TAmnias (Gheuk Irmak), left tributary of the Halys. Of inscriptions made it possible to fix the site at Tach-Keupru. Pompeiopolis must have been part from the kingdom of the Déjotarus; it was incorporated with him into the empire and it uses in consequently, on its inscriptions, the era of autumn 6 BC. AD: the dedication to Cn. Claudius Severus, consul for the second time (173 AD) \ patron and founder of the city, bears the date 178 of Pompeiopolis (= 172/3 AD). The city is called on its inscriptions, as on its coins, pr/cpoicoXiç naKpXorçovfaç, which allows us to believe that it was the seat of the xocvlv of Paphlagonia.

The certain coins of Pompeiopolis (No. 1 could be Cilician) were minted stories from Antoninus the Pious to Septimius Severus and do not bear dates. See further (p. 176) for the identity of Pompeiopolis and Sebaste.

SINOPE

f e Sivouty), today Sinob, on a promontory of the Euxine, was founded in 63o BC. BC by the Ionians of Miletus, at the time of the Cimmerian invasions, replacing cement of an ancient Cappadocian village. She soon became the most powerful Black Sea city and metropolis of several colonies. The Persian conquest does not appear not having reached you first. In the 5th century she was a client of Athens: Pericles rids himself of a tyrant, Timésilaos, and sends him an Attic clerouquia. During the passage of Ten Thousand (400) it is independent, but threatened by the Paphlagonians. Around 375, Datame, satrap of Cappadocia, attacked him; on the orders of the great King, he raises the seat (Polyen, VII, 21, 2 and 5; ^Eneas Poliorc. 40); but later he must have managed to capture the city, because its name appears on drachmas from Sinope, as well than those of several of his successors. At the time of Alexander's expedition, Sinope was subject to Darius, and Sinopian ambassadors were arrested in Persia (Arrian, III, 24, 4); it then belonged to the rebel satrap Ariarathe. After his death (322), it nominally depended on the first diadochi. Then Sinope is free and allied with the Rhodians, who helped it repel a first attack from the kings of Bridge (220); but, in 183, Pharnaces seized it by surprise, and it became for one century the capital and necropolis of the kings of Pontus. In 70, after a fierce defense, it is taken by Lucullus and almost destroyed by fire. However, in 47, Phar- Naces II, son of Mithridates Eupator, occupied it and took refuge there after his defeat at Zela; he the pound by capitulation to Domitius Calvinus (Appian, Mith. 120). Shortly after, either living of Caesar, or immediately after his death (in 45/4 according to the coins), she received a Roman colony which shared the land and the city with the ancient inhabitants (Strabo, XII, 3, 1 1); this colony seems to have enjoyed jus italicum (Ulpian, L. 1 Dig. 5o, i5). The colony of Sinope was nominally attached to the province of Bithynia Pontus, then under Diocletian at the Galatic Pontus (hereinafter Hélénopont). The monetary history of Sinope can be summarized as follows 3:

I. Sixth and fifth centuries BC. Thick silver coins (drachmas, obols), of a slightly reduced aeginetic standard (drachmas of 6 gr.) and of a very archaic style for a long time and anepigraphs. Types; on the right, head of an eagle and dolphin; on the reverse, hollow square.

VI. Pontic domination (183-70). Bronzes of common types in the kingdom of Mithridates. On a coin (n° 60), from the year 74 BC. BC, there is a Pontic date (era from 297 BC. AD)-

VII. Roman period (70 BC to 270 AD). Colonial bronze coins, with Latin legends. The colony is designated first by the letters C. I. F. i.e. C(olonia) I(ulia) F(elix), once (no. 92) by C. I. F. C(aesarea) or C(inope?) (com- adorn the play of Faustine, n° 1 19, with C. L F. Cinope); in countermark we find once (No. 96) C I. C. '. Since Hadrian the legend becomes C. /. F.S. or Sino or Sinopes. Until 55 AD. J. C the coins still bear the acronyms EX D(ecu- rionum) D(ecreto). As for the dates, rarely omitted, they are counted, until Severus Alexander, from the colonial era of 45 BC. AD; since this emperor (224), based on the era of Roman conquest, 70 BC. AD Already on a coin of Julia Domna (n° 122) we find the era of 70. These singularities have not been explained. — Among the types of setbacks we will simply point out two. First place, the curious archaic idol, with a bald beard, and wearing a sort of turban (n° ni): it should not be confused with Hades-Serapis. Secondly, the human leg surmounted by a bull's head (n* 145), under the reign of Severus Alexander.

1. The attribution of pieces no. 74 to 80 (Augustus period) is doubtful. The designation of the colony by the letters C1CFC is unexplained and we do not know the duumvir C. Cassius C./. nor the proconsul (Claudius) Pulcher. A fortiori do we not understand the acronyms C. A. C. D1F. S.C.C.R (senatus consulta, civium Romanorum 7) and DI. F. S. C. C. A. C. These pieces have sometimes been attributed to a Spanish colony (Pauly-Wissowa III, 2854) because Ap. Pulcher, consul in 38 BC. AD, governed this province.
