Sicyon: Civic Bronze and Alexander-Type Silver

A reading path through Warren’s two-part study of autonomous bronze and Noe’s Alexander coinage, with attention to classification, dies, and hoards.

Begin by distinguishing a civic bronze issue from silver struck in the Alexander tradition. The mint name connects the material geographically, but the two groups require different catalogues and chronological arguments.

Classify the bronze before assigning a date

Read Warren’s Part 1 and Part 2 as a single study. The first establishes the opening groups; the second continues with groups 7–12 and draws on hoards and archaeological deposits. Record the group, type, controls, and physical characteristics before applying a proposed date to an individual specimen. A recognizable dove or civic inscription begins the comparison but does not complete it.

Compare the silver with its own evidence

Noe’s Alexander Coinage of Sicyon provides the specialist route into the Alexander-type issues. Keep those series separate from the bronze grouping: a shared city does not make group numbers or emission sequences interchangeable. The Macedonian and Alexander guide supplies related mint and hoard studies for comparison.

Resolve collection references

Luynes II is the relevant installment of that collection catalogue for mainland Greece. A collection citation identifies a recorded specimen; a die study or hoard argument supplies a different kind of evidence. Preserve both references when a later study revises an older attribution.

The studies listed here are source-linked references. Their catalogue pages provide publication details, citation downloads, and links to the repositories where full-text availability can be checked.
