Hultsch synthesizes literary, epigraphic, weight, and coin evidence to reconstruct Greek and Roman standards, denominations, and systems of account. The work is useful for understanding the metrological terminology and conversion schemes employed by nineteenth-century numismatists and for tracing arguments about the Aeginetan, Attic, Euboic, Phoenician, and related standards. It can also help explain why older catalogues assigned coins to particular systems even when their mint attribution was uncertain.

Because the work predates much of the modern archaeological, die-study, and provenance evidence, verify chronology, mint and ruler assignments, legend readings, authenticity, and present specimen locations against current corpora and databases.
