Numismata Graeca: Greek Coin-Types, Vols. I–III

The first half of Anson’s iconographic corpus arranges Greek coins by the objects and figures shown on them rather than by mint. It enables researchers to compare recurring deities, animals, plants, weapons, symbols, and attributes across regions and periods, and can help identify a fragmentary reverse when the ethnic or ruler’s name is unreadable. The references and plates also expose visual parallels that are difficult to see in geographically organized catalogues.

Because the taxonomy and attributions reflect early twentieth-century scholarship and the illustrations vary in fidelity, verify the mint, date, denomination, and exact type in a current corpus or specimen database before using the work as evidence.
