KINGS OF THE BOSPHORUS.

The classification of the Medals of the Kings of Bosphorus being suscep- tible ajoordlioi of improvement, following the discoveries ^i have been made, we have to give a new one almost complete description; however, we return, at the head of each reign, a body of work, as we have always days done, and we do the same in the course of the description, so that we can more easily see the movements of medals which were brought about by this new work.

SAVROMATES I.

(Ascended to the throne of Boipiore shortly after the death of Polemon I, and reigned at least until Fan of Rome 768 or 764, 10 or XI of J.*G. ) (to)

Gold medals awarded to Sauromate /"*,

(a) This results from the dates on which the gold medals awarded bear to Sauromate I«', and described here under the first seven numbers. The first of these dates corresponds to the years of Rome 755 and 756, a and 3 AD, and the last in the years of Rome 763 and 764 « 10 and tx of J.'C If you believe the medals, Mr. 8 and 9, which are corner modern, Sauromate I still reigned Tan of Rome 766 to 767, i3 or 14 AD. However, we could hardly extend the reign of this prince, without tightening within too narrow limits that of his successor Sauromate II, of which there is quite a lot number of medals. Indeed, the latter, whose medals born bear no dates, could not reign beyond the year of Rome';^ or 770, 16 or 17 AD.” since it is to these years that corresponds the first dates from Rbescuporis II. It should be noted that the an- born from the Bosphorus era always correspond to two consecutive years cultures of Rome or the Christian era, since it is known that they begin in the fall.

However, having today his eyes nne. perfect imprint of the metal authentic piece of the Thenpob* mnsée, which we owe to Textréme advice of Mr. de Steinbuchel, director of the Galerie de Tienne, we can assure you that he would refuse to face the evidence so as not to not read there, like us, BACIACHC. We add let us confirm that the medal of MIthradates, described above, is the N^. 66, belonging to jBdL le haron .de Cluandoir, from which we we also have a portrait, oflSre a perfect portrait of this king- conforms, for the head character, to that of the Theupoli museum, and that the legend is there arranged in the same way. According to this, it is not possible to assume that the queen ^>epaepyris does not is the wife of Mithridates, and not that of Sanromate 1^'.

These observations come to Tappni from the opinion we have advanced in the March issue of the Bulletin des Sciences i8a8, relating to an almost similar medal published in the Odessa Journal, in February and March 1827; however, having seen Paris has no imprint of this very crude medal, we must add ter that it appeared to us to be of a larger diameter; what could give rise to the idea that there are counterfeits of medicine in stone from the Theupoli Museum. (a) The era of Bosphorus having begun in Tantumne of the year of Rome 457, as Cary and Froelich were pronounced, if in this year^ we add 4^7 *iu, we find the beginning of the year 458 dn Bosphorus fell in the autumn of Tan of Rome 914. But Antoninus died in the spring of this year; the date 458 does not sanoit therefore suit his reign. However, it is indeed the head of Aatonîa When you see this medal, it seems antiquated. We therefore cannot get out of trouble assuming that this date HNT. , his head of this prince, is a mistake to engrave of the medal.

Maro- Aurelius did not die until around the spring of Tau of Rome gSS, where Tan 476 already co-exists with Tère dn Pont; so it should not be, the head of Commodus, but that of Marc-Anrèle which we see on this medal. However, the head seems to be that of Commodus, then that she has a youthful look and a growing beard, which does not suit not to Marcus Aurelius, aged at that time from 57 to 58 years old. He fans believe of deax cboses Tune: we well that, to flatter Marcus Aurelius, he was represented young, while he was advanced in age, although the date is a mistake by the engraver.
