to the Roman conquest, although the example of the treaty between the Komains and the Aetolians is not absolutely decisive. In a treaty of this kind, in fact, the victors were able to impose on the vanquished an exceptional price for value of gold, price all to their own advantage and different from the actual commercial price of the same metal (1). In general, in the second-hand data provided by grammarians and lexicographers on the value relationship gold and silver, we must be wary of a confusion that they have often established between the reciprocal proportion of the gold coin and silver coin in the same country and that of the true power of the two metals. In a large number of countries, before Alexander, and in part especially in the royal coinage of the Achaemenids, we have sought to establish a simple and exact relationship between the number gold and silver coin, cutting the two pieces rate so that the stater or didrachm of gold was worth 20 silver drachmas, the hemistatère or gold drachma 10 (2) (see further, g 2 of this chapter); but, precisely- To achieve this, we gave a different weight to the drachma of gold and that of silver, to make up the difference between the monetary ratio :: 1:10 and the value ratio effective (3). What we only distinguish with certainty, it is that here, more than when it comes to gold and money, we must be wary of the danger of confusing the monetary ratio between the units of the two metals, with the real ratio of their respective value. Here the gap between the copper and silver is very considerable; but it*s the re- result of the particular economic circumstances at Egypt, where silver was always relatively the most powerful metal rarer (1) and where internal circulation continued under the Lagides, as before, to almost become copper only. Just as in Athens, we find ourselves in the presence of an exceptional report, but in opposite direction. If it were necessary to determine approximately an overall average for the most valuable relationship usual between the two metals in the Greek world, this would be at the numbers between :: 1: 120 and :: 1: 100 that we we would stop. These are the ones who are most likely both as a commercial relationship and as a relationship monetary port, in countries which, during the second half of the 5th century and the course of the 4th, cut their copper on the foot of their silver drachma (see book VI, chap. not only still found today in its neighborhood, but whose deposits mark out the ancient amber trade route, heading from Olbia towards the shores of the Baltic (1); in the 5th century and in the first The first part of the 4th century was the Athenian tetradrachms. 4. In general, throughout the Hellenic world, the mon- nest of gold and silver shows itself to us with a remarkable title quite pure. Almost everywhere, gold is often without alloy; the analysis reveals only 3 thousandths of silver united to gold in the staters of Philip of Macedon and Alexan- dre (1) (see book VI, chap. v, \ 1); it's the biggest degree of purity that could be achieved with the processes of refining available to the ancients. In the darics (book VI, chap. iv, g 2), there is a little alloy introduced voluntarily; but it only goes up to 3 hundredths (2). The Greek silver coinage does not also present, in its general lity, only extremely minimal alloy proportions, although lower than those accepted by modern people. Athenian tetradrachms from the belle époque vary between 0.986 and 0.983 end (3). Those of the second series (book VI, chap. v, g 7) no longer contain, on average, that 0.966 of silver and 0.032 of copper; but they compensate smells this alloy by an addition of 0.002 gold (4). For the period after Alexander, we find the analyzes of the Berlin scholar. A tetradrachm of An- tiochus I of Syria contains 0.990 of pure silver, and one of Ptolemy Soter 0.931. In 265, we only find 0.0133 gold, compared to 0.1594 silver and 0.8273 copper; in 267, it is a simply golden piece, the analysis of which gives 0.1728 silver, 0.8207 copper and 0.0065 tin; from 268, there is no longer even money, but only gilded copper.

We will refer the reader to cliap. iv of book VII, § 2, with regard to the title of the silver coins of the empire and its prodigiously rapid alteration. Gossip, according to Savot's definition, is an alloy copper, brass, lead and a small quantity tin. We don't really meet any employees in the form monetary only among a few Gallic tribes, at the last time of their independence, between the wars of Caesar and the organization of the provinces of Gaul by Augustus (see. book VII, chap. m, § 6). The pieces of this artificial metal are always cast, prodigiously coarse, offering in their manufacture all the indications of circumstances of shortage and pressing need. Their analysis gives 60 0/0 copper, 10 zinc, 20 lead and 10 tin (2). These metals, joined in these proportions to copper, in greatly reduce the ductility, and consequently the composition situation of the alloy almost required the substitution of the pro- moved from casting into a mold to striking. This is the system that we encounter in Sparta until only at a very late time. The laws of Lycurgus therein banned the use of gold, silver and even copper in commercial traffic, and did not allow taking use only iron as an instrument of trade (1). He was not, moreover, in Sparta an iron currency to strictly speaking, as some authors have said in using an inaccurate expression. The iron used there for exchanges was in elongated bars, ocîhi (2), each of which had the weight of an Aegean mine- tick, designated in Laconia by the very ancient name of nehatop (3) . The Spartan iron pelanor, with this weight of more than 600 grams, is evaluated at i chaques (4) or one half a silver obol, obviously of Egyptian weight. Some indications, rather imprecise in fact, from certain authors of antiquity (1), would seem of a nature to make one think that Lycurgus would only have regularized by its laws and to prevail to the exclusion of all other metals, in Spartan usage, a use of iron in bars as a commodity used for computer exchanges naires, who is said to have been general in the Peloponnese before the invention of money, but concurrently with the em- bending of copper and silver bars for the same object. 1. We designate by the expression “furred coins” parts which consist of a metal blank of little value, copper, iron, lead or tin, forming core and coated in all its parts of a thin sheet of silver, more rarely gold. Core and envelope were submitted in same time in monetary minting. The stuffed pieces were therefore currencies without intrinsic value, which were issued for species of silver or gold by a fraudulent transaction.

These pieces are particularly multiplied in the Roman series. We also find stuffed coins Greek since the most ancient times; but the soul is almost always copper or lead. The one of iron, in the monuments that have come down to us, appears clean to Roman coins. Yet when Aristotle (1) says that the inhabitants of Clazomène, in a moment of pressing financial distress, minted iron for silver, he clearly alludes to a cash issue filled.

even where in this city you began the first production of a national currency (see book VI, chap. n, § 2). All ancient legislation punished this crime of the same penalty, death (1). That the counterfeiters, whether among the Greeks or among the Bomains, have often made stuffed parts, that's what it wouldn't be possible to doubt in the presence of certain originals of pieces of this kind (2), even though Pliny (3) would not say so not in formal terms. However, at least among the Ro- hands, the counterfeiters were rather limited to executing on the coins in circulation of overmoldings in lead or tin (4), which they passed to a silver sauce.

Very early, the needy governments and few honest people had recourse in their necessities to the nature of fraud that we are talking about. Herodotus (5) relates that Polycrates, tyrant of Samos, having a large sum of gold to pay to the Lacedaemonians, deceived them by giving them simply gilded lead coins. The deception is so crude that it is hard to believe it, and Herodotus he himself has reservations about the implausibility of the story.
